Dekton, a Carbon Neutral product for its entire life cycle

Dekton Liquid

28.09.2020 Dekton is now officially a carbon neutral product. This recognition was supported by emission reduction projects and Cosentino Group‘s good practices in terms of sustainability and environmental management. And it is an important achievement in the role of the Spanish multinational in the fight against climate change.

Carbon neutrality has been achieved for the entire life cycle of the product, covering Scopes 1, 2 and 3, from the extraction of the raw material and the calculation of the direct and indirect emissions from its production cycle. And those derived from its use, to the end of the product’s life. This milestone, in addition to the above-mentioned calculations, has been fostered by the strong measures taken by Cosentino in recent years. The measures aimed to achieve greater efficiency in terms of energy, consumption of resources, use of renewable electricity and sustainable mobility policies.

Dekton, Carbon neutral

In the field of carbon footprint calculation, an emissions reduction plan has been implemented. In the case of Dekton, the plan has resulted in a 7% reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Thanks to both the implementation of the best available techniques and the optimization of processes, with investments of more than 3 million euros. Finally, in order to achieve carbon neutrality, Dekton has offset its emissions by investing in GHG emission reduction projects. These projects are not only responsible, but also have a strong social component in support of achieving the SDGs of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

In Cosentino we are progressing alongside the international momentum in the transition to a low-carbon economy, promoting energy efficiency, emissions reduction and sustainable mobility. This approach enhances our innovative character. And allows us to improve processes with a vision of the future. And, ultimately, combines our performance with strategic goals such as innovation (SDG 9), sustainable production (SDG 12), and climate action (SDG 13), says Antonio Urdiales, Environment Director of Grupo Cosentino. This achievement, that encompasses the whole life cycle of Dekton, fills us with pride as it recognises the work done over the years towards carbon neutrality, circular economy and the fight against climate change, concludes Urdiales.

Offsetting emissions

The remaining CO2 emissions not yet offset in the mandatory market (42,532 tons of CO2 in 2019, for one year’s production) have been balanced by the voluntary cancellation of the Certified Emission Reductions (CER) associated with a project of biogas electricity generation located in Loma Los Colorados, Chile, a facility registered with the UN’s Clean Development Mechanisms.

The aim of this project is to develop a system for the collection and sustainable use of gas in this area, located to the north of Santiago de Chile. This involves operating a landfill biogas collection system for electricity generation, which results in an average reduction of 1,317,482 tons of CO2 per year. With this, Cosentino is involved in an initiative that directly impacts sustainable development by supporting the local economy through training and job creation in this region.
