Icon, by Ernestomeda, selected for the ADI Design Index 2013 yearbook

Icon has been included in the ADI Design Index 2013 yearbook, meaning that it is one of the projects short-listed for the XXIII Compasso d´Oro Award, the most prestigious accolade for the production and design quality of Italian-designed goods, services, processes and systems.

To coincide with the yearbook’s presentation, theDesignIOpera exhibition is opening at the Milan Triennale, presenting the 139 designs short-listed this year; it will be open to visitors until 2 November.

Icon was selected by a jury of more than 100 experts for its impressive contents in terms of innovation, technical features and style. One key, distinctive feature of this project is the creation of the “AIR” door, an Ernestomedapatented solution that involved a conceptual rethink of the conventional kitchen storage unit: the door is equipped with a ventilation filter concealed in the panel, which aids exchange of the air inside, ensuring optimal food conservation.

On the materials side, the company has developed and patented ICONcrete, a concrete-look finish suitable for use in the home. What’s more, the kitchen’s units are fitted with exclusive opening/closing systems: on the Flex wall cabinet, initial vertical slide is combined with a second phase in which the door rotates, giving access to the whole of the cabinet’s interior, while the Evolution pull-out peninsulaextends to various lengths depending on requirements and the number of diners.
